Romney takes one for the team, suspends campaign
February 7, 2008 2:04 pm PoliticsDuring his speech today at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Mitt Romney suspended his bid for the republican presidential nomination. Romney re-affirmed his conservative credentials in his speech saying that by staying in the race he was making it easier for a democrat to win the general election, and in turn, surrender in Iraq. By ending his campaign, he says it will help a republican get elected, which means protecting America.
As this happened I was writing a post as to why Romney and Huckabee should join forces, which obviously will not happen now.
So is the race over? It is unclear. McCain is now way ahead of Huckabee in funds and delegates. However, Huckabee runs an amazingly effective campaign as we saw on Super Tuesday. Romney will hold his delegates and his campaign donations because he classifies his stepping down as a “suspension”.
There is talk that McCain will look to have Romney as his Vice Presidential candidate but nothing has been confirmed.
With the democrats still battling for the nomination, the republicans now have the upper hand if they rally around McCain.
